Alghero 2012 (Day 1): The Beginning

I've just flown above the mediterranean sea and I couldn't resist to take this awesome picture, symbolic for our carefree journey ahead.

We've just arrived at the alghero airport and it looks way more tropical than I expected.

There is nothing like arriving in a sea of red sunshine at your tropical destination!

We're currently waiting for the bus to arrive to take us to our hotel. First time I didn't mind the waiting!

On our way to our hotel...Somewhat nervous about it. The environment and the city leave a stunning impression with each bus-stop though. What a sight!

Finally arrived at our destination, I couldn't resist to take this cheesy yet powerful shot of our new temporary home. And what a home it will be!

Alghero 2012 (Day 0): The Waiting Game

As I'm writing this, the sky is grey and cold again here in the Netherlands. Me and my girlfriend are about to go to our first vacation ever.

After many discussions and considered options, we've finally chosen to go for the quiet and peaceful town of Alghero!

It's known for it's relaxed and sunny atmosphere where one can fully recover from the many stressing and worries from everyday life. The videos look very promising and naturally, I can't wait to see it for myself!

I have updated my iPhone music with many new albums, since I'll be processing many reviews this week. The highlight of this collection must be the new Axtone compilation! I've been waiting for this one for an entirety! Very curious to hear it. I'll also bringing "Silk Digital 02", "Stick By This" and the new Jody Wisternoff and Pryda album for the more relaxing moments on my trip.

I'll be updating this journal from day to day untill the sad final date this vacation will end. But that's far and far away, so I'll be looking towards the beginning only.

Really excited! It's a matter waiting now before we can enter the plane.

The Rex | Flaming June (Jaytech & James Grant Remix)

The heat has been brutal for the last couple of days. It's clear that we are on the brink of falling into what has to be one of the most scorching summers to date.  I'm writing this, the sun is going under in a characteristic heatwave fashion.  Only being June, yet so warm, the "opposite climate changes" seem to take effect. The nice weather is welcome though, after so many winter weeks. Besides the sunny vibe that's been going on, there is even more good news!

One of my favorite tracks on my beloved Anjunadeep 02 CD, has to be James Grant and Jaytech their rework of "Flaming June". There are few tracks that capture the "sound of sun" so well as this. Fiery, Hot yet pleasant would be the way to describe this highlight. Since 02 was my first ever Anjunadeep moment, I wasn't really that into it at the time. Apparently, this remix has never been releases. Today it is, almost 2,5 years later. Luckily I didn't have to wait since I didn't know it still needed a release, because it would have made me go berserk.

It's great news that this has finally landed and although it is old, it's in no way outdated. Great remix by a great duo during a great period of pre-summer.

Flaming June, here we come!

Evolutionary | Heavenly

With the "Feast Of The Ascension" just a few days behind us, I thought it would be appropriate to keep that religious spirit while picking this week's "Evolutonairy" track. This week's pick can be only one track. It's by Above & Beyond and it's heavenly...

Their album "Group Therapy" was an eye opener for me personally. Trance can be very delightful, it's just has to be less intense and more subtle. This description would fit Above & Beyond's album pretty well. Although I didn't purchase it, let alone review it, I felt pretty good about it. It's just that I'm not as familiar with this legendary trio as I should be, so instead of jumping into false and ignorant conclusions, I let them guide me step by step with their label and single releases. These releases have been really fun to "collect" since it could go any way with the remixes. Now, with many remix packages left behind us, it's almost time for one of my favorites of the album to get a proper release.

"On My Way To Heaven" is quite a clever track. It sounds like a love story at first, but it turns out to be a homeage to the world's biggest legend to date: Jesus Christ. Lines like "But since you put these thorns around my head, you know I'm a king" and "I'm a king of everything and nothing" make it clear that this inspiration for many is being sung about.

That there will be a single release for this one is certain, since A&B have been playing a club mix of it lately. Although I'm more a fan of the original, the remixes and this club mix sound equally interesting. Really looking forward to this one.

A Football Player's Fairytale

Drogba. What a phenomenon. This night, the veteran of Côte d'Ivoire completed his rose as a phoenix from the flames in what could be his last season for Chelsea.

Leading a team to victory against the mighty Barcelona is one thing, bit doing it again to Bayern in their own home is unmatched. Written off after the first half of the season, Drogbawas headed to his silent enmd as a football player. He refused, and made hinself immortal instead!

Not only did he score the last minute equaliser, but also the last and winning penalty of the evening. All the pressure of an entire career in the home of the enemy was on his shoulders. But he did it. He took his faith in is own hands, and increased his already legendary fame by fivefold.

I'm no Chelsea fan, but this is just beautiful. A true footballers fairytale!

The Fossil | Knights & Merchants

The years have flown by. I can hardly remember playing this game a long time ago, yet it feels not too distant at the same time. I was really hooked on this one, and it made me fall in love with the medieval times for a short period of time. The power of this game has to be the simplicity of it in combination with it's hidden debt. What game forces you to grow food for your soldiers, that would otherwise starve? This has to be one of the best indie-games I've ever played!

Anyway, I installed this game again and it remembered me of a not too old Laidback Luke remix I used to be hooked on as well. Surkin's whole EP was a big hit at the time, but this remix in particular was being played everywhere!

The power in combination with the classic "Chicago-House" stabs that were popular at the time, still would do finally at any time. Luke gave it it's own personal unique twist of course, adding a bit of dirt/funkyness to an already fun track. Great to hear this again, but now it's time for some nostalgia gameplay!

Column | Generation (MI)X

We live in an age, where social interact has never been so easy and versatile as ever before. Thanks to sites like Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Facebook and other social media, it has become possible for the next generation "DJ" to share and promote his mix with just a few clicks of his mouse. Since it's a matter of seconds, many will blindly press the share button to get their mix all the attention they think deserves. Nothing wrong with that right?

I think there certainly is. In fact, I think 99% of mixes on the web aren't worth anybody's time and just make it harder for the good stuff to stand out, and here is why:

The Shared Monstrosity

Nowadays "Social Media" mixes and even live DJ-sets have a tendency to contain the latest tracks, smashed together without any clue or idea. The once so wonderful world  of mixtapes has become a fast-food joint-esque industry, where nothing stands in the way of gaining as many hits on your platform as possible.

Instead of presenting something special, people are spammed to death, harassed if you will, to hit "the like" button on somebody's  thoughtless one hour creation. Because when, through the means of sharing/mutual spamming, one actually decides to look onto one's mix, he or she will find nothing but empty hits paced together into a monstrous mutant of electronic music. In other words: 99% of the mixes on the web aren't worth anybody's time. So what IS a good mix?

Idea Before Creation

I believe that in order to promote and share a mix everywhere on the web, you should be certain that you have something worth somebody's time (because the supply of amateur mixes on soundcloud alone is already beyond anybody's grasp).

I've always told myself and others, that if you want to make a mix, one should go to the drawing board first. There you should line out the overall thought and idea behind your mix before even considering to plug in your midi controller! A story line ,if you're capable of that(James Zabiela does this as no other), should be the centerpiece of your one-two showcase. That can be considered the hardest part I believe.

The next step is to select the tracks to tell your story/idea with. The selection should be placed in an order that keeps a certain flow in the mix, the best way to do this is with own personal cuts and edits, since the idea you are presenting is something personal as well! (for an extreme reference; see Joris Voorn's Balance Mix and shit brix)

The real trick here though is here to not only select them in the right order and keep the attention of the listener, but more importantly: to make the listener aware of your idea and storyline. The easiest way for this is with vocals or vocal samples. It takes real skill and some form of musical intellect do to this without words (again, Zabiela prevails above all others, James Holden and Sasha come close though!).

The mixing itself is actually the easiest part, especially when you make your own edits to keep things as smooth as it could be.

No Words But Deeds

This is what I think should be the basic understanding of the term "mixtape". I would like to see some more of the above instead of just the newest tracks smashed together in one hour. I'm not judging anybody's mixing skills here, but I don't think many people will press play on something that contains tracks that they themselves are already surrounded on a daily basis.

I myself have been working on something for which I don't yet have name for, but it tries to capture the many struggles of life and explain them in a one hour musical journey. Greatly inspired by James Holden and James Zabiela,  I've been working on this for quite some time now. It's blueprint (picture) has been lying around for a while now and the time has come it's time to finish it.

To be continued...

Evolutionairy: Corsten's Earth Escaper

I already knew that "Take Me" was one of WKND's finest tracks, but I never really knew why. Yesterday I suddenly hit me. This track contains the "State Of Trance" that's been used to often, but understand by so few. The tempo/base of the track and it's melodic elements are almost symbiotic. Neither the lead or the bassline guides the track, it's an collaboration by both. Such synergy can result into a deep venture in the mind towards your deepest desires. It happened to me this week, on this track.

I found myself climbing a ladder, which appeared to be the entrance point of a giant vessel. Suddenly chased by hundreds or thousands of people, I quickly rushed towards the top of that ladder, into the vessel. The vessel appeared to be some kind of spacecraft that was ready for launch. As the bassline progressed, the engines roared and started to fire up. The huge crowd of people chasing me grew and grew, and the desire to escape increased simultaneously. As the vessel started ascending, the crowd started shrinking. I was airborne. Monitors on the dashboard showed my news segments of myself, being hunted down for something I couldn't remember. I knew I had dodged the bullet by climbing the ladder I suddenly found myself on earlier. The vessel reached top speed and earth was getting smaller and smaller. As the bassline started to climax, I found myself entering the atmosphere. I was nearing my freedom.

The bassline vanished, there was silence and emptiness now. The soft melodic elements of the track made me realise of the sudden darkness around me. The vessel has shut down after the penetrating of Earth's anorganic shield. I started floating, as gravity was no more, through halls filled with systems and machines. The open empty space started to show as the bassline began pounding like once before. With my heartrate rapid, I found the switch that would the vessel work again. It all felt so surreal but I felt I needed to pull down that handle for the consequences would be terrifying. The bassline grew faster and heavier as did my heart rate. I touched the soft handle of the switch. I pulled it down.

The sheer power of the machines in the vessel started all at once, so loud and sudden that I could feel it in my entire being. The vessel rushed with immense force and speed towards the unknown, as I found myself gazing towards and shrinking earth. I started to feel better somehow, as the melody and base of the track grew together into one being. The ecstasy of rushed through my body as earth was nothing but a mere glimpse of what It once was when I first looked at it from the ladder. The monitors suddenly started blinking and malfunctioning, as I saw the last image of the the masses gazing towards the sky, where I now pushed the final button towards complete separation from the world that wanted me dead.

As the last beat vanished, I suddenly opened my eyes and saw I was still in the same bus where I was in when I started up this track.

I discovered and witnessed something truly Evolutionary;

Corsten's Earth Escaper.

Trails We Blaze

On this rainy, depressing day, I've found some sunshine on my own.

It was announced long ago that Jody Wisternoff, considered a legend by many, will release a debut album on my beloved Anjunadeep. My first thought went to his absolutely breathtaking contribute on Anjunadeep 02 called "Lassoo". That track still sends shivers through my spine and goosebumps to my skin. So I was well excited!

My excitement, however, decreased when hearing the first track that will be released prior to the album. "How You Make Me Smile" is in no way a bad track, but just really doesn't fit with my personal taste of the progressive side of melody. I started shifting through the recently available iTunes previews quite thoughtlessly and didn't think much of it.

Today, my opinion changed dramatically as I turned on the mini-mix. In this mix, Wisternoff showcases his tracks with more delicacy and time for the listener to judgde. I fell in love with the first track, "Back To Me" and every  track that followed! Especially "Red Stripes" really makes me well excited for this album.

I'm currently awaiting patiently on "Trails We Blaze", the album, and various tracks like "Orinico", "Just One More" and earlier mentioned "Red Stripes" to be set free into the wide wide world. I hope I can claim it from an online store before I'm in the plane to Alghero, because this album can't be missed when lying on a white sunny beach!

Ear/Head/Body Attack 2012: Paranoia

Today, it's nearing a month since I had my ear/head issues, and I'm a bit alarmed. The issues have still not resolved itself and even physiotherapy seems to miss the target. I used to have some back/neck complaints followed by a tired feeling and a unreal form of headache as the cherry on top. Now it has evolved to a constant feeling of pressure around my head. It doesn't seem to go away.

I feel really glitchy and zoned out at the moment. My body is feeling weak as my muscles hurt (various limbs) and sometimes tingle for no apparent reason. I caught myself staring at my hands with horror as they kept lightly  vibrating. I'm unable to hold them still, same goes for my head.

As I'm typing this, my hands noticeably have trouble keeping up. They feel more and more tired with every keyboard move. I'm also experiencing a very curious feeling in my legs, especially the right one. It's in a constant state of growth, so it seems.

These symptoms don't seem to go away on there own, so reason enough to be frightened. I'm visiting my doctor on Thursday, so I hope I have some more answers by then.  I keep labeling it as an extreme form of  over-tiredness, since my sleep has been horrible these past couple of years. Maybe it's a form of stress, it wouldn't want to rule that out.

I'm actually a bit  happy to go to the doctor soon, because waiting in a state of confusion and desperate guessing is even worse than the actual verdict itself, I believe. The least thing I must do, is looking for answers on the internet. The things that I find there are absolutely horrifying. I really need a medical opinion right now. The guessing it too much to bare anymore...

Please let it be stress.
